Ytsara is proud to announce the launch of a new spa at the Reid’s Palace in
Madeira.

Reid’s Palace on the sub-tropical island of Madeira, has just opened its new state-of- the-art spa that includes a unique array of indigenous treatments from Ytsara. The Spa at Reid’s building programme was part of the hotel’s fourth phase of renovation which started on 16 January 2006. The spa has been developed in collaboration with Neil Howard from Howard Consulting Group in the UK.

Located in a separate building adjacent to the pool deck and fragrant gardens, the spa has five therapy rooms each with terraces, offering the option to have outdoor treatments with views over the Bay of Funchal and fresh sea breezes. Unique to Madeira, the double therapy suite has two treatment tables, its own outdoor patio area and private plunge pool to enable couples, families and friends to experience the most luxurious therapies together. Separate changing facilities are provided for ladies and gentlemen with showers, dry sauna and steam rooms. A fully equipped cardiovascular fitness centre is available.

The main spa menu is Ytsara that draws on an Asian blend of healing and therapeutic remedies and ties in well with the sub-tropical climate of Madeira, using indigenous products such as cucumber, rosemary and mint for its signature treatments. It has a wide range of spa programmes for all age groups, couples and families. Guests can enjoy a special family treat by taking a Ytsara treatment with their son or daughter. A 50-minute children’s treatment, ‘Nangfa, Angel Bliss’ is available for 6 to 16 years and is priced at €80/ £54. Gentle pressure is applied to the scalp, legs and feet, followed by a grounding oil massage performed on the back of the arms. The treatment improves children’s quality of sleep, soothing the nervous system and strengthening the immune system. At the end of the treatment, the child is offered a refreshing drink and is presented with a special gift.

There are three signature spa treatments that are exclusive to Ytsara at Reid’s Palace. ‘Chumyen, After Sun Cooling Wrap’ restores skin with a calming and healing wrap of Thai white clay to cool down and a freshly crushed blend of Cucumber and Mint to nurture and hydrate. The 45-minute treatment is priced at €70/ £47. ‘Sacred Lily and Jasmine Extravagance’ offers an ancient and exhilarating selection of sacred flowers including Lily and Jasmine, known for their healing powers rubbed on skin to refine and purify. The 90-minute treatment is priced at €130/£88. ‘Botanical Indulgence’ releases pollutants from your system with a warm bath of Lemongrass and Orange. A light body scrub is followed by a wrap containing Papaya, Aloe-vera extracts and then is covered with Banana leaves. After a spa lunch, a purifying and aromatherapy massage uses a unique blend of Cajeput and Petitgrain essential oils. The 4-hour treatment is priced at €325/£219

Pranayama consists of 2 words: Prana that means Life in Sanskrit and Yama that means Discipline and Control. Therefore, Pranayama is the art of controlling the prana (life force). Pranayama works as the basis for spiritual awakening in yoga.

In Sanskrit, the word for breath is the same as the word for Life – Prana -. The first thing as you do when you enter this world is to inhale. The last act in this life is to exhale. When Prana leaves the body, we die. The breath is a metaphor for life energy. In yoga, we seek to sustain and enhance the life force as much as possible – absorbing as much as Prana through breath, food, visual surroundings, sound, all our senses possible. The most significant way of doing this is through the pratice of Pranayama breathing techniques or breath control.

There are different techniques depending on the sought-after benefits:

  • Abdominal breath or the Natural breath
  • Dirgha Pranayama or the Yogic Breath
  • Ujjayai Pranayama or the Ocean sounding
  • Nadi Shodhana or the Sweet Breath
  • Kapalabhati or the Skull Polishing Breath
  • Breath of Fire
  • Analoma Veloma for yogis only

Benefits of Pranayama:

  1. Provides deep relaxation to the body and mind.
  2. Strengthens the nervous system and respiratory system.
  3. Improves concentration
  4. Relieves stress, depression and hypertension

General guidelines to practice Pranayama:

  1. Blow your nose, cleaning your nostrils before beginning
  2. Begin practicing Pranayama in a room temperature environment, free of smoke, chemicals, noise or any other harmful element.
  3. Breath though the nostrils only, unless otherwise specified
  4. The fluidity of your breath is the priority – if your breath begins to be uneven, stop what you are doing, allow your breath to return to its own, natural rhythm
  5. If you begin to feel faint or dizzy, stop what you are doing and allow your breath to return to its natural rhythm. This is the result of the increased oxygen levels in the body, which your body may not be accustomed to.
  6. Sit on your heels in a semi-lotus position with your back straight
  7. Gently and slowly inhale and exhale through your nostrils with your eyes closed

Practice this breathing control for 5 minutes every morning and extend the time according to your time and capacity.
